BECOMING A PLANT OPERATOR

 

A Plant Operators job can be very interesting and challenging career, and plays an integral key role in production of the facility.

Plant Operators work in facilities such as Open Cut mining, Underground Mining, Port Facilities, Power Stations, Off Shore Oil and Gas Rigs. 

Some of these people come from all walks of life and range from backgrounds that are not particularly related to the mining Industries which include Police Officers, Labourers, Teachers, Bakers, Bank staff and Butchers.

Often companies will target qualified tradespeople such as Electricians, Fitters, Diesel Fitters and Boilermakers, so they can utilize them in a multiskilled environment.

Their primary role as a Plant Operator and if required to utilize their skills, can be called on to repair plant which has failed.

Open cut mining environment Plant Operators can often utilize their skills from one machine to another, from bobcat, loader, scraper, dozer, dump truck, and face shovel to dragline.

Underground environment plant operators use equipment such as continuous miners, jumbos, boggers, ventilation equipment and roof bolting.

 Port facility Plant Operators skills include manning dump stations, unloading of trains, stackers/reclaimers and shiploaders for loading of product.

All facilities have a central control room, which monitor the site operations. Control Room Operators communicate with all site personnel. In relations to alarms with plant and equipment, air quality, maximizing feed rates to and from equipment, monitoring quality of product and blending if required.

Control Room Operators are the first point of contact of safety in particular, and will manage all emergency response procedures.

Plant Operators will often rotate with control room operators as part of their normal roster; keep their skills updated with all plant and equipment.

Companies often advertise for trainee Plant Operators and may run for a period of 12 month to 2 years depending on the company.

This can be an apprenticeship for Plant Operators starting from familiarizing themselves with the site, to learning to operate smaller machinery, through to larger sized equipment.

The trainee can often be offered a position at the end of their depending on the companies requirements at the time.

This is an excellent way to gain skills within the industry.
