Is the Interstate Highway System an example of pork spending and wealth redistribution?

There was political influence in determining routes. Congressmen were looked upon favorably if the routes passed through their districts for access by their constituents.

Tax dollars were spent, and money was made by construction companies, heavy equipment manufacturers, etc.

It made some businesses more profitable (trucking, oil, etc.) than they would otherwise be.

Could such an effort be put forth by the private sector, not the government?

Yes. What article in the Constitution allows the Government to preform such acts?

  • Wes:

no it’s an example of the NAU just like you have been forewarned.
Now you go put your tin foil hat on and be quiet

EDIT LOL it’s funny how some are so quick to rationalize what they once denied, Wake up AMERICA

ok have the private sector tear up the interstates and every one can use route 66 and route 1 both 2 lane highways. don’t know how anyone will get to work unless the live and sleep on the job

Actually, the interstate highway system was quite a boom to the US in all areas. I still remember the trip we took when I was a kid right after they opened the Pennsylvania Turnpike. It was awesome. The massive highway systems not only opened up commerce but travel as well.

You are right in that it closed a lot of businesses who were previously on the main route from here to there. Mostly gas stations, restaurants, mechanics. There are winners and losers in almost every aspect of governmental decisions.

The highways were paid for with Social Security money because at the time there was an excess of it. I wouldn’t think roads would be a matter for the private sector. There are state highways and bypasses around large cities paid for by local governments.

considering that fixing the roads was and has been part of state government budgets for over the last 20 years , I would say that stimulus money is a hoax
