what is the advantages and disadvantages between two runway surface? asphalt and concrete?
i’m curious to know between those two type of runway surfaces. some airports have asphalt runway some have concrete runway. why is the cost of constructing new runway is so exorbitant? is runway use special type of asphalt or concrete or just the same type like the one that being use on road construction.
if we were to calculate the cost of laying a new runway of an international standard aiport which one cost more? runway and taxiway surface or instrument approach equipments via Non-directional beacon (NDB), VHF omnidirectional range (VOR), Global Positioning System, etc.?

I like Concrete ones since the Aspault will wear faster. Some times they put down the Aspauht to save money and know that any damage can be fixed faster.
Concrete is LONG LASTING and very smooth.
Asphalt is CHEAPER and not so long lasting.
The cost comes in when you think about how THICK runways really are. They were repairing the one at Travis back in 95 I think it was and they were 2 or 3 FEET thick. Add that kinda thickness to the Width and LENGTH and your talking MAJOR Bucks.
Heck I heard that JFK had to pour 6 MILLION CUBIC YARDS just so that they could handle the A380’s monster turning radius.
it boils down to cost effectiveness…asphalt is cheaper and easier to repair…
but something to realize is that every runway reguarless of what the surface is, the base layer is always concrete…no exceptions…
No large airport has asphalt runways that large aircraft land on. It won’t take the weight, and it gets too soft in the heat.
Concrete is more expensive and labour intensive, which is hy some small general aviation and private strips are made from asphalt.
However Concrete lasts far longer, and can withstand far havier landings and weights on it. For this reason, most runways are made of concrete.
the aspalt is more cheap and easy to repair….
it grip the tires perfectly either wet or dry conditions…..
and aspalt used in racetrack and large runways…….
concrete is more expensive but long lasting……
and hard to repair specially when the cracks starts to occur..!
concrete is very slippery when wet
and very hot during dry seasons……
Concrete is much tougher… it will last longer and can take a real beating by the heavy jumbo jets… The asphault is being used in alot of cities now, including my own as a replacement for concrete roads, I guess they put the asphault right over the old concrete and in 5 years they will conpletely re-pave the roads… The only ILS approach into my home airport was closed down for months while they covered it with asphault and at times we were down to one runway while they worked on the intersecting areas… I do like the way the black stands out when you are on approach however…
Dear Sir
Asphalt bitumen is always better than concrete for landing.
anyhow we will be obligued if you could send us technical explanation, viability for asphalt surfacing for airports.
